We already had grandiose construction projects —
«Farewell visit» to the famous unfinished peninsula was paid by the correspondent
They say that history has no subjunctive mood — but imagination still cannot stop it. Yes, and looking at a giant box
The majestic unfinished building near Shchelkino may become history by the next New Year holidays.
This level was set by the Crimean government to organizations engaged in the dismantling of the facilities of the Crimean nuclear power plant. Time will tell whether they meet the deadline.
We already had grandiose construction projects —
It’s hard to say how it would be. Perhaps it would be a new big city or an industrial and energy center, that is, a completely different point in the development of Crimea.
Or maybe the story of his success would have turned into a second Chernobyl — and today the exclusion zone would have been much larger than the territory where the pounding of a pneumatic hammer is now heard. And there would be no one to arrange extreme tours. Nobody knows how it would have developed …
There will be no explosions
Dismantling of the Crimean nuclear power plant has been going on for several months. This can be judged by the scrap and concrete battle, which grows like mountains around the reactor building.
However, the tower itself still rises, giving thrill-seekers fragile hopes for a new tourist season under its arches.
And yet no. There will be no more breathtaking, mind-blowing forays into the dark echoing corridors. The territory is cordoned off, there is security at the entrance. The work is being carried out as intensively as the Soviet concrete of the highest grade generally allows.
Director of the state-owned enterprise «Krymvzryvprom» Yuri Potapenko, in whose jurisdiction it was unexpectedly difficult, and the non-core object explains that the analysis of structures will be carried out exclusively by mechanical means.
And given the quality of the structures, blowing them up is simply ineffective. In addition, other production facilities are already located in the immediate vicinity of the station, including the bases of Chernomorneftegaz. They can be seriously damaged by the blast wave.
This option, despite the name of the enterprise, is categorically not considered.
The only possible way is mechanical parsing. Although in this case it will not be possible to do without losses, since the concrete monolithic frame was built with the expectation of a small nuclear explosion. After all, this is a special purpose object. Here, the thickness of the walls is 80 cm, and in some places it reaches one and a half meters. Where are the pneumatic hammers …
There are a lot of difficulties. The reinforcement is very high, the density of concrete is also very high. According to plans, the dismantling should be completed by the end of next year, but no one knows what surprises there may be during the dismantling.
The main surprise for the workers and designers was already at the very beginning. As it turned out, there is no engineering documentation for the facility.
Internal plans, location of corridors, premises, wall thickness, composition of building materials … All this was established empirically.
And although the project of the Crimean NPP was typical, amendments (sometimes significant) were made to each such facility, built during the Soviet Union, taking into account the specifics on the spot.
But even a typical project, as it turned out, is unrealistic to get today: operating enterprises, strategic security, state secrets … We need to improvise.
Now dismantling is carried out according to a project developed from scratch by a design organization, which conducted research as far as possible.
Nevertheless, it is extremely difficult without the initial documentation, so the work is actually done blindly.
There have already been surprises. In particular, when dismantling the buildings of the utility rooms, they found that there was less reinforcement in the walls than theoretically could be, but more concrete.
And what does the alloy of the famous «snails» — the remaining inside the main circulation pumps — consist of? Even the scrap hunters could not cut them into «souvenirs».
The dismantlers have yet to get close to these forty-ton giants.
The representative of the Crimean Ministry of Construction, Sergei Gorbov, says that the only thing that they could not take away from here were «snails». During the examination, it was found that they tried to cut them — but it did not work out.
Only analysis can show what kind of alloy it is.
For reference: The named value is approximately 6.5 thousand Megapascals, or 64.8 thousand atmospheres. For understanding: trained divers are allowed to dive to a depth of 100 meters, where the maximum pressure is about 10 atmospheres …
Subtleties of perspectives
The main argument for demolition is the safety of citizens. Indeed, in Crimea, even the season did not pass without the fact that one of the visitors eager to receive a dose of adrenaline, due to their imprudence, did not end up at least in the hospital.
In March 2021
There have been several attempts to close the facility. But as soon as the gates were installed, or some other fences, after a week or two they were already taken away. There were various proposals, including using the unfinished building as a tourist site.
But the difficulty lies in the fact that it has been under the open sky for 30 years, so the object must first be examined for its condition, and this is too expensive and
Experts are sure that the unfinished Crimean nuclear power plant does not carry historical or tourist value today. And over the past decades, everything that could be sawed off and carried away from the building was removed and cut out.
They even managed to remove the hermetic door. And all the valuable bulky equipment was sold through a subsidiary back in Ukrainian times.
Even the unique Danish crane used to build the station and other valuable parts were sold abroad.
Of what is now suitable here, only scrap ferrous metals and, possibly, concrete battle. However, in order to implement it, it is necessary to bring it in line with the standards, that is, to interrupt it in the appropriate factions, but this is a big problem.
There is not much scrap metal here either. Its main mass is in the reactor itself, to which it is still necessary to get.
And most importantly — for what?
The most surprising thing is that the Crimean authorities have no concrete plans for the territory, which will be vacated after the dismantling of the nuclear power plant.
As the head of the republic, Sergei Aksyonov, said in his social networks, «at the moment the task is to put the site in order.»
Perhaps soon we will hear about the next grandiose project of the «new city». Why not? After all, the territory is promising, the «gate» to the peninsula — the Crimean bridge — is just a stone’s throw away.
Perhaps the residents of Shchelkino, who came to work at the nuclear power plant, and received decades of impenetrable hopelessness and oblivion, will finally have a chance for prospects and a better life.
And no matter how sad it is to say goodbye to the reactor of the unacceptable Crimean NPP, which has become a kind of «visiting card» over the decades, I would like to hope that these changes will lead to better.
